Nyssa Mitchell is a cinematographer based in Naarm (Melbourne), Australia.
With beginnings in painting and photography, Nyssa became drawn to cinematography whilst completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Film and Television) at the Victorian College of the Arts. She now works as a cinematographer across a multitude of formats including narrative, music videos, commercials and documentary.
Nyssa’s work on narrative shorts has appeared at major film festivals, both locally and internationally. Her credits include Pernell Marsden’s 2024 film THE MEANINGLESS DAYDREAMS OF AUGIE & CELESTE, which received award nominations at several Oscar® qualifying festivals including Slamdance (Grand Jury Prize Nominee), Melbourne International Film Festival (Winner Best Australian Short), Sydney Film Festival (Winner Best Director) and St Kilda Film Festival (Winner Best Short Film). The film also won Best Short Film at Fantastic Fest, and her 16mm cinematography was praised by the MIFF judging panel.
Her other short film credits include Emily Dynes’ HOLD STILL (Winner Best Short Film at Melbourne Queer Film Festival 2025), Jasper Caverly’s PLEASURE (Melbourne International Film Festival 2024) and Madeleine Mytkowski’s SALT DREAMS (Adelaide Film Festival 2023, Flickerfest 2023).
Nyssa recently completed principal photography on her debut feature film RIVER, directed by Zane Borg, and has further long-form narrative projects currently in development.
In February 2025, Nyssa was named as one of IF Magazine’s prestigious Rising Talent cinematographers.
